With Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/965 of 21 June 2022, the kernels from the edible variety of Jatropha curcas L. were authorised as a novel food and included in the Union list of authorised novel foods (Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470). The Regulation is applicable from 12 July 2022. For a period of 5 years, only the original applicant, the company 'JatroSolutions GmbH', may place the novel food on the Union market.

The seeds of the edible species of Jatropha curcas L. are authorised for use as untreated seeds (or candied or preserved by sugar) and as a food ingredient in cereal bars, breakfast cereals and dried fruits at maximum levels of 5 g/100 g each.

This authorisation is based on the assessment of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published in January 2022 on the safety of hydrothermally treated seeds of the edible species of Jatropha curcas L. (Chuta) as a novel food within the meaning of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 (EFSA Journal 2022;20(1):6998). EFSA concluded in its assessment that the novel food is safe under the conditions of use proposed by the applicant.
